At least 16 people have been killed on Friday after river levels rose as fast as 8 feet an hour in Arkansas. Dozens more have been injured and rescue crews continue their search.

Many of the people affected were camping along the Little Missouri and Caddo rivers in the Ouchita Mountains. The waters continued to rise throughout Friday night and by sunrise the heavy rains and flash flooding had stopped.

Marc and Stacy McNeil of Marshall, Texas, survived by hauling their pick-up truck between two trees and standing in waist-deep water. “It was just like a boat tied to a tree,” Mr McNeil said, describing how the truck bobbed up and down.

According to Renee Preslar spokeswoman for the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management they have received calls from relatives of about 73 people who haven’t been heard from since the flash flooding.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has been ordered by President Obama to be in close contact with the officials in charge of the Arkansas emergency teams and “to report back concerning any unmet needs.
